Crochet handmade gifts

We are reaching the end of a rather busy half term holiday here in the UK. For the first time in many years, my husband was able to meet up with his three siblings, and my children met their cousin Harvey for the first time (he lives in Australia). It’s been rather hectic, with lots of food prepped and eaten, days out, juggling many ages, interests and energy levels. In the midst of it, I realised that everyone was super organised and brought with them Christmas and Birthday gifts to swap and save international postage…

Personally, I have been working on gifts for my dutch nephew and niece to send with my parents so at least I had some organisation to fall back on!

Gradually I have been improving my crochet skills – I can’t quite remember how many times learning to crochet has been on my New Years Resolution list! I still don’t feel that I am a crocheter but my skills are improving. If I can learn so can you:)

Learning a new skill is motivated by achievable, desirable projects. My first attempts when I tried to crochet dishcloths just did not motivate me…

So what inspires you? Heers some ideas to wet your appetite.

Crochet Handmade Gifts

Celebration bunting – I followed a tutorial from Planet Penny, taking odds and ends of wool camping with a crochet hook. Please note the bunting may not look great until blocked, it’s amazing how transforming blocking is!

Toddler cardigans – this unisex pattern Fairly Isleish Cardigan comes from Ravelry. If you are gradually building up your crochet skills like myself then a toddler/baby sized garment is a great place to start. It takes less time, and yarn so when if you make mistakes it’s not too much to unravel and redo. I suspect my sleeves are a little short in comparison to the body, I’m hoping that the sleeves are the right length and the cardi is long in the body!

Stripey cushions – this is my first crochet project where I have created the design. It is one simple stitch and perfect for using up scraps of yarn.

Easy DIY Crochet Cushion, Tutorial, perfect for a beginner

Twist of Fate Headband – this pattern I found courtesy of Fave Crafts, which has lots of great crochet inspiration. I love how quick this should be to make, great for a last minute gift.

Manly Ripple Afghan – another pattern found at Fave Crafts by Lion Brand Yarn. For those with a little more patience than myself a blanket is a great project for the autumn evenings.

As a newbie to crochet do you have any favourite patterns to recommend? If you haven’t tried the craft I highly recommend it, with you tube videos easily to hand it’s not that complicated. As with knitting, there is lots of research suggesting crochet is good for ones well being.

Your crochet looks great Vicky. I love crochet, it's so quick and once you know the basics you really can do anything. I'd recommend joining some fb crochet groups. People share all sorts of fun things that can give you ideas and they are all willing to help if you get stuck and post a photo of your half done work. Attic 24 is one of my all time fav crochet blogs, and I just collect fab ideas on pinterest too.

Still on my bucket list, must get around to trying to learn. A local shop did a 6 week course but no longer, which is sad. May pop in on Wednesday and ask again.

I think you are doing really well, love all your creations the tip about the baby clothes is a good one as tiny.

As a matter of fact, a toddler/baby sized garment is also hard for me. Becasue the clothes is too small. And when I make a mistake, I have to start again.

I crochet for years until I switched to quilting. Easy beginner projects are Hair Scrunchies and the Mile a Minute Afghan and the old stand-by Granny Squares.
