Super easy DIY Star Decorations

This DIY star decoration is a fun and relatively quick make. These affordable and easy DIY star Christmas ornaments are perfect for decorating your tree and home.

In previous years I played with several ideas for curtain pole ring DIY Christmas decorations but I have to admit this is my favorite idea so far – I still have stacks of curtain pole rings for future holiday seasons! Although I must admit I do like these clay star decorations I made last year.

All you need is cardboard (an old cereal box will do), cinnamon sticks, some yarn, paint and old curtain pole rings for these upcycled star ornaments. Enjoy time crafting on your own or make this a family crafting activity.

If you prefer I have this video tutorial for you.

Easy DIY Christmas Decorations

Materials

  • Curtain rings
  • Yarn
  • Hot glue gun
  • Star shape cookie cutter
  • Pair of scissors
  • Paint and paintbrush
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Cardboard such as a cereal box

Step 1 – Let’s start by removing any metal rings on your curtain pole rings. Paint the ring with any paint you have to hand – I used acrylic and applied two coats allowing to dry fully between coats.

Step 2. Whilst your paint is drying cut out cardboard star shapes using a cookie cutter as a template, if it appeals you can make a selection of different sizes of christmas stars.

Step 3 Wrap a yarn around your star, an easy way is to start from the inner corners and work outwards to the star points. Using a hot glue gun is a good way to secure the end of your yarn.

Step 4 Using your glue gun adhere a cinnamon stick across the curtain pole ring about a third of the way down the circle.

Step 5 Finish assembling the decoration. I have used a clear plastic thread designed for jewelry making to loop over the cinnamon stick and stitch to the back of the star to secure it.

Step 6 – Make a hanging loop and secure to the top of the ring so you can hang your diy star decorations.

Variations to your beautiful decorations

The diy paper star, instead of being wrapped in yarn, could be decorated with different colors with wrapping paper, scrapbook paper, tissue paper or festive papers using a glue stick to secure.
