Easy DIY gold leaf abstract painting

It has been a whirlwind of a weekend, with lots of DIY and jobs around the house. We have finished decorating the spare room ready for my parents who are staying later this week, helping us cover school holiday childcare. The spare room is a rather small double room.  As with most of our home we have gone for the thrifty model of decorating, the curtains found in a charity shop for £5 set the colour scheme. In order to continue the splash of colour I have made matching cushions for the bed and a teal with gold leaf abstract painting.

The curtains I shortened to fit – I always shorten from the top moving the header tape down, so much easier than trying to rehem from the bottom. My husband had an MDF blanket box, which I have to admit detesting apart from its storage space! So this has been customised with Ash mineral paint, along with a bedside table we found in a junk shop.

The room is coming together, I think it has cost approximately a hundred pounds to remodel the room, to remove the old dinosaur wallpaper, provide storage and a themed relaxing feel.

Easy DIY gold leaf painting on canvas

RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES:

To start you will need a large canvas. I have customised a printed canvas we already had, painting over the top.

Using a variety of colours of acrylic, build up layers of colour using confident brush marks. This painting is white for the top third, the bottom two-thirds is made up of teal-ish colours. Allow to fully dry.

Repeat layers of colour, adding depth to your painting. The second time I have used a knife to apply the paint, a pallet knife would be ideal.

Allow to fully dry.

Apply PVA glue across the area bridging the white and teal.

Allow a couple of minutes for it to go tacky. Apply gold leaf. The first layer of gold leaf I have used sheets. Once dry with your finger to remove excess… if you wish a broken up effect rub whilst drying.

Consider the piece, do you wish to add more gold leaf? I did, so I applied further glue then loose small pieces of gold leaf which had the odd hint of copper and silver in.

Rub the excess of gold leaf onto a tray or similar then you can reuse the pieces that rub off.

The picture is mounted on the wall so when my Dad sits up in bed to read the paper his head doesn’t collide with the picture!
