Last minute gift – Going green toiletry set

December 17, 2018

If you are like me you are busy whipping up last minute gifts, somehow Christmas always creeps up on me… It’s the same every year, my first set of gifts to be given each year are to my cake and compline group. We meet monthly, share our lives, eat cake and finish the evening with an evening said service. I have known everyone for twenty years, there is a lot to be said for deep friendships that grow over many years. We share small gifts each Christmas. This year, three days before we met I struck upon the idea of creating mini toiletry sets, aimed at encouraging the reduction of plastic in the bathroom.

My last minute gifts are mainly made up with materials to hand, a small drawstring bag is a great gift in itself and requires no wrapping!

Going Green Toiletry Set

The going green toiletry set includes a drawstring bag, bamboo toothbrush, shampoo bar and handmade deodorant, the plan was to include handmade toothpaste but my ingredients didn’t quite arrive in time.

To whip up your own drawstring bag you can find a tutorial here. Adapt the size to be suitable for a bamboo toothbrush in height.

For handmade deodorant, I use Jen of “a sustainable life” recipe -bicarbonate of soda, coconut oil, cornflour and essential oils. This is packaged in mini kilner jars.

I have been using a bamboo toothbrush for six months now – I bulk bought these through the internet.

The shampoo bars I bought from the local market – far more affordable than Lush. I am conscious that shampoo is personal to different hairstyles. If you are more organised and making ahead of time you could make your own, I have found this recipe – note shampoo bars take weeks to cure.

For your own toothpaste try out cucicucicoo’s recipe – I could not find all the ingredients locally so had to order online, sadly the ingredients didn’t arrive in time to include in my going green gift sets.

I have to confess I felt a little awkward about giving gifts which encourages the reduction of use in plastic. But in reality, giving people the chance to try new plastic-free handmade items was gratefully received.
