The idea is to show that Christmas Shouldn’t Cost the Earth. If you’re reading this, chances are you love to craft, but why not craft with the resources we have on hand – let’s get creative!
Each day a challenge will be set by means of a video and blog posts giving some suggested ideas and crafts. These posts will also contain a linky party for anyone and everyone who wants to join in to link up their projects – both past and present, that answer the challenge. The linky party can be found on all our blogs and we’ll try and come up with different ideas and tutorials for the challenges too. So please to visit us all, and then share your ideas with us as well! We’re looking forward to seeing how these challenge are met!Ready, Steady….Let’s Christmas Craft!
Today is Challenge 1 :- Take an item of old clothing you no longer wear or is torn/stained and turn it into a Christmas ornament or decoration.
I am so excited about this series, with great plans to share a fresh tutorial with you every day (except when it comes to recipes!!). There are lots of easy ways to save money at Christmas with a little planning ahead. Using what you have to create new items is a great step in this direction. Today I was planning on sharing with you a tutorial for transforming t shirts into necklaces however I have been struck down with a sickness bug. Instead I am resharing with you how to felt a jumper. This can then be transformed with hand stitching to create a beautiful Christmas tree decoration. This felt bauble is a great use for old stained jumpers or any with moth holes.
Start by finding an old wool jumper. The wool content and washing label are important, for the best felting results you need a hand wash jumper.
To felt the jumper put it in the washing machine on the hottest temperature and wash. You may need to wash a couple of times for a quality felt.
Iron interfacing onto the back of your newly formed felt. Cut out baubles, using a glass as a stencil to draw around. You will need two per bauble.
Have fun with a variety of hand embroidery stitches and colours to decorate your bauble. Not confident about hand embroidery? There is a variety of stitched with instructions here.
Lastly sew a loop on for hanging, then using fabric glue stick a front and back of a bauble together. I would love to see any Christmas decorations you have made from old clothing.
