Easy DIY Christmas wreath tutorial

I love upcycling, today I am making my DIY Christmas wreath with materials to hand. If you are looking for a foliage wreath this tutorial is not for you!

This holiday season I am embracing homemade Christmas decorations, including this easy homemade wreath for the front door. This festive wreath is made with materials I have to hand, collage papers (old gelli plate prints) cinnamon sticks, an old embroidery hoop and some threads from my stash.

If you don’t have a stash of patterned green papers available you can collect green printed papers from magazines or have fun creating your own, for example you could use a potato for potato stamping, you don’t need a gelli plate for diy printing at home. If you would love to try gelli printing check out my How to Gelli Plate Print article.

Materials for your DIY Christmas Wreath:

  • Green collage papers
  • Hot glue gun
  • Threads
  • A wreath base – Wire wreath form, or old embroidery hoop
  • Pair of Scissors
  • Cinnamon Sticks

At the end of the post there is a you tube video for you showing each step.

Step 1

Rip up your various papers into roughly 2″ squares. Check the size by wrapping around a cinnamon stick so you can see the edges of the cinnamon stick either side, ensuring the paper meets.

Step 2

Wrap each cinnamon stick with one of your collage papers, and secure with your hot glue.

Step 3

Wrap each paper with thread, and tie the ends in a secure knot, trim the thread. I have chosen to work with red, orange and burgundy to contrast with the green, in traditional Christmas colors. Choose colors which suit your home decor, you may like to add sparkle with gold or silver threads.

Step 4

Secure the wrapped cinammon sticks to your wreath frame using your glue gun. Start by placing cinnamon sticks opposite each other, dividing the base into four, with each cinnamon stick pointing to the middle of the circle.

Gradually infill, think about your color balance, contrasting light and dark papers along with the variety of threads.

Step 5

Optional extras:

  • Add a bow
  • Add dried orange slices
  • Add dried pine cones

Step 6

Lastly, hang your wreath

I hope you have loved making your own Christmas wreath as much as I have. If you love it as much as I you can change up the paper colors and repurpose the wreath for any holiday decor.Check out these further Christmas wreath ideas.
