This easy DIY Halloween garland is a great way to add Halloween decor to your home and is reusable year after year. Learn how to make this Happy Halloween Garland with or without a Cricut maker, with free SVG files and printable templates.
I have to admit I am somewhat dragged into Halloween and all it entails by my children, who love trick and treating, dressing up and now decorating our home. In hindsight why did we ever choose to get married on the 31st October? We really didn’t think that through!!
One of the aspects of the Halloween spooky season I do enjoy is Halloween crafts (do denim pumpkins count as Halloween craft?!)
This inexpensive craft project is perfect for the fireplace mantle, the front door, or indeed any part of your home. DIY garlands are an easy project to add seasonal home decor.
Easy Halloween Garland
- Felt Balls (you could use pom poms or tassels as an alternative)
- Felt
- Black Fabric
- Heat n Bond
- Ball of jute twine or a piece of string
- Yarn needle
- Ribbon 4 yards per color (I have used two, an orange ribbon and jute type ribbon)
- Printable templates (SVG Bunting shape, Letters) (Word templates bunting, letters)
- A pair of Scissors
- An iron
The finished length of the garland is 2 yards (190 cm).
Let’s start by cutting out the felt garland flags. These measure 3″ by 4 3/4″ (8cm by 12cm). You will need 14 flags in total.
Next let’s create the letters. Iron heat n bond onto the wrong side of your black fabric. If you are using a Cricut maker load up the SVG template, and a fabric blade. Ensure you press the black fabric carefully to the fabric cutting board and then cut it out. Alternatively, you can use the printable template to hand-cut out the letters.
Place the fabric so the heat n bond side is facing the felt, cover the fabric with parchment paper and iron to adhere the black fabric letters to the felt.
Cut a long length of string or jute twine (2 yards, 190 cm) and thread your yarn needle. Stitch with a simple running stitch stitch along the top of the first letter of your banner.
Cut up lengths of ribbon, my orange ribbon is in length 4 3/4″ (12cm), and the jute ribbon is a little longer at 5 1/2″ (14cm). You need pieces of ribbon per color.
Fold the ribbon over the string and wrap it with twine, knotting on the back of the banner. I have chosen one orange piece followed by a jute piece of ribbon.
Then place your needle through your felt ball and pull through before adding two pieces of ribbon and then stitching the next letter in the banner. Continue until you have threaded Happy.
Simply repeat the process for the word Halloween, my string measures for this.
This simple DIY Halloween decor idea works brilliantly alongside my trick or treat game, perfect for any Halloween Party. Even I can get into the Halloween holiday spirit (even if it is my wedding anniversary!!).

The banner looks great with those denim pumpkins.
