Over the years I have made many envelope cushions, they are super quick and easy to make. Adding a pom-pom trim takes them to the next level. If you need a gift in a hurry then a DIY envelope cushion cover is a quick win!!
Alternatively how about the gift of an experience, teaching a grandchild, godchild, daughter how to sew an envelope cushion?? Making a cushion for a bedroom gives a child a great sense of achievement, providing the perfect excuse to spend quality time together. This year I have made pom-poms cushions with a three-year-old and with my daughter – neither maybe particularly interested in sewing but loved this quick project. My niece was delighted with the cushion she made, she chose the fabric & pom-poms with the cushion being made for her quiet space.
DIY Envelope Cushion Cover
- Fabric 1/2 yard
- Pompom trim 2 yards
To make a cushion cover for a 16″ pillow:-
Cut a square 17 by 17”, cut two rectangles 17 by 12”
Double fold over the long edge of the rectangles and press.
Pin, then stitch along the fold to secure.
Next tack the pompom ribbon around the edge of the square front piece. Use a long hand stitch to tack in place the pompom ribbon, with the pompoms facing inwards, at a 1/4″ from the edge.
Place one of the rectangles, right sides facing, to match the raw edges of the square, place the second rectangle on the opposite side. They will overlap in the middle creating the envelope. Pin carefully, ensuring you do not stretch the fabric.
Using a zipper foot stitch all around the square cushion.
Zigzag stitch the raw edges to prevent fraying, then trim the corner. Turn right side out and insert your 16″ cushion.

Oh my gosh, I LOOOOVE these pillow covers! I'm a huge pillow fanatic, and love pom pom trim, too, so this is the perfect combo! I think that I need to follow your lead and baste my pompom trim in place next time I use it, because mine always ends up shifting around when I just pin it. Speaking of pins, this is going straight onto Pinterest! :) Lisa
