It is super easy to make a DIY witch cape using a former skirt, what’s not to love – a ten-minute dress-up project?
This year Children in Need led my daughter’s school to hold a dress-up day with a movie theme. She is seriously into her books and has just discovered The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy. We were equally delighted to discover this has been made into a movie – idea sorted. Next up – make a perfect witch costume.
First up the dress. My Mum gave me this dress in case I could reuse the fabric, a lovely crushed velvety fabric in teal/green colour.
I have made the Uptown Downtown dress for her (see previous version and pattern review here), using a former t shirt of my husbands for the lining. The color is just gorgeous, I can just imagine her wearing the dress over the coming Christmas period for parties and a trip to the pantomime for her birthday treat.
Next the easy peasy DIY cape – I bought a long black skirt from a charity shop. This is quickly transformed, what’s more, you don’t need a sewing machine for the good witch cape.
First, unpick the back seam and remove the zipper.
Secondly, thread elastic through the waistband, a safety pin is extremely helpful for threading the elastic. Pull until the elastic fits comfortably and then hand stitch to secure.
The black cape was extremely quick, easy and cheap!!!
The outfit was complete with a witches hat and broomstick, a pair of stripey tights and a lacy top underneath the dress. She loved it. She has had a sickness bug this week, she was so pleased to be well enough to go back to school and not miss out on the fun day:) What’s more the homemade witch costume is perfect for a Halloween party.
I adore how kids love dressing up – but I’m not quite so keen on coming up with costume ideas that appeal and are achievable!!
It gives me great satisfaction to upcycle/recycle clothing from one item into something new:) What’s your favorite clothing transformation?

I know it's not Halloween yet, but since Google brought me here and I loved what I have seen, I must say that the costume is just perfect. And the crushed velvet fabric kills it. Thanks a lot for sharing this and keep up the good work.

I adore the crushed velvet fabric, it's a brilliant colour too. The whole outfit looks great, I think that must be the easiest cape I've seen upcycled. :)

I just found this. Did you know the entire TV series is available on YouTube? (I didn't know there was a TV series!) The cape looks great!
